Never heard of Brandi Carlile but saw this new CD and decided to give it a spin. You know the singer and her songs are great when the recordings live or inside a studio are both wonderful. Very strong vocal, comparable to P!nk in mho. Watch "The Joke", the CDs biggest hit, in "Videos."

Notes:
1. From Rolling Stones: "Hold Out Your Hand," from her new Dave Cobb-produced LP By the Way, I Forgive You, she creates a roots amalgam that travels through many corners of the splintered American soul: police brutality, nonstop violence, dissolutions, discouragement. Not, however, without a solution. And for Carlile, it's simple. "Hold out your hand," she sings in her unparalleled howl. It's furious, complex and a little punk rock. M.M.
2. Do an internet search for images on "Fulton County Jane Doe" and understand the haunting message of the song: Oh, and I always will remember//When the lonely day is through//That somewhere far from Fulton County//A stranger says a prayer for you ...
3. "The Mother" is one of the better songs as a tribute to her daughter born to her wife: Welcome to the end of being alone inside your mind//You're tethered to another and you're worried all the time//You always know the melody but you never heard it rhyme//She's fair and she is quiet, Lord, she doesn't look like me ...
